At first glance, most would say the organization has no responsibility for employee satisfaction, happiness and fulfillment. They argument, which is quite valid, is that satisfaction, happiness and fulfillment come from within and it the responsibility of the individual. But, then the question must be asked, "Why do so many organization look to motivate their employees? Why are there incentive programs? Why did things like the traditional company picnic even exist?" The answer is of course, that a motivated individual performs much better than an unmotivated employee and the company desire to get all the energy it can from an individual for what it pays in wages.

But there is a deeper issue here that is really never discussed. Individuals find satisfaction, happiness and fulfillment from what they do in life. When we do things that satisfy our inner longings whatever those longing may be, we are more satisfied, happy and fulfilled. The less we satisfy inner longings, we become depressed, lethargic and begin to disengage from life.

The whole thrust of Organizational Creativity and the concept of Orchestrating the Organization is about recognizing that all that we do arises from an energy that flow from within our being. That flow of energy is tied to the intention for our life for it is the intention for our life that is the source of our life. It is what brought us into the world and energizes us to act. The more we can do things in the world that align with the intention for our life the greater inner satisfaction, happiness and fulfillment we find in life no matter what we do. The less we align with that intention we find some way to disengage from life.

The issue for the organization is not trying to motivate its individual to get them to perform better. Rather, if the organization looks for individuals who’s intention for their life aligns whole or in part with the tasks the organization needs to have performed, they will have motivated employees. The organization needs to do nothing to motivate them other than giving them the opportunity to perform a task which aligns with the intention for their life. Of course, the wages must be sufficient for the individual to survive in the world. Otherwise the employees’ attention will be else where than on the task to be performed. Any organization that needs incentives and motivational tools should look carefully at how they may be robbing the individual of their creative life energy or they have actually hired the wrong individual for the task which needs to be done. Consideration should be given to effectively harnessing the creative spirit rather than robbing the creative spirit of its energy.
